School Safety Dog Announcement

Reported by jim_senft@ipsd.org on 9/10/18

Dear Indian Plains families:

Indian Prairie School District 204 and the Indian Plains school community continually strive to ensure that our students learn in a positive and effective environment. Maintaining a culture of learning that is built upon a strong, safe and secure school campus remains our top priority. In the coming weeks, the district will be implementing a positive addition to our school safety pro-gram. This addition will be occur in partnership with Interquest Detection Canines of Chicago-land and our high schools. Interquest has been working in area schools and enhancing safety on school campuses for over 15 years.

The Interquest program uses trained school safety dogs that are friendly, non-aggressive breeds such as Golden and Labrador Retrievers to conduct random inspections of our campuses. The dogs are trained to detect the presence of many prohibited items that pose a threat in today's schools including:

-Illicit drugs and narcotics
-Gunpowder-based items
-Beverages that contain alcohol
-Commonly abused prescription and over-the-counter medications

School campus common areas, lockers, parking lots and grounds will be randomly inspected for prohibited items. If an item is found, we will initiate the appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with our existing school policies and procedures.

The program does not involve the search of individual students. At no time will this ever be allowed.

Over the next few weeks, students can expect to see their safety dog throughout the school building. We expect the safety dog to become a regular part of the school day and part of the culture of our school. It is our hope that the addition of our safety dog will contribute to our goal of ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for all students.

Thank you for your continued support.
